NICOLE E-News March 2016

NICOLE 20 year anniversary

NICOLE was established in 1996 as a concerted action under the 4th Framework Programme of the European Community. In 1999, due to strong support and a convergence of shared interests, it became self-supporting and fully financed by the contributions of its members.

This year we will celebrate NICOLE’s 20th birthday. We would like to invite you – as a current NICOLE member, a past member, or witness to the development of NICOLE – to share your stories. What have been the most significant events and developments in NICOLE’s twenty-year history and what are your perspectives on the future? Over the span of the next couple of months, we will publish a series of interviews with former chairpersons on NICOLE’s website, newsletter and LinkedIn page.

The organization committee is working on the programm after receiving more than 20 abstracts in the last few weeks and will anounce the program within the next weeks!

We invite you to send in your contributions, so that we can publish them as well. Please contact NICOLE secretariat for further details.

Spring 2016 workshop – questionnaire

NICOLE Network Spring Meeting & Workshop
Turning failure into success – What can w learn when remediation does not go as planned
Vienna, Austria, 15-17 June 2016

The call for abstracts for the Spring 2016 workshop and the preparatory questionnaire are distributed within the network.  We have received more then 20 abstracts and the organisation Committee members are working on the program which will be announced soon.

After distributing this questionnaire early February, we have received 46 answers from throughout Europe. If you missed the questionnaire, we would very much appreciate it if you could fill it out through this link. We would like to encourage you to distribute it also within your networks. We also welcome presentations and information for the questionnaire from outside of the NICOLE network!

There is continuous effort needed to manage land contamination in an effective way, and hence to find ways to optimize the current ways of working. Often, workshops and conferences try to find the solutions in presenting success cases as templates to replicate. Yet, there are a number of remediation projects not meeting the various stakeholders expectations and thus requiring new thinking to achieve the outcome expected. Owing to the level of trust NICOLE’s members have built over time among themselves, it seems possible to have open discussions around projects having encountered obstacles on their way to completion and to learn from these. Therefore the decision was taken to hold a workshop on the non-successes, and even on the failures or on “what goes wrong” and what we can learn from this for the next project or the future.
