The South African Department of Environmental Affairs expressed that they are strongly in favour of this network being established in South Africa and are highly supportive. Recent News – MediTerra

MediTerra has been awarded by the European Environment Agency (EEA) with the contract “Study on Land Recycling”. For performing this assessment we have the collaboration of ARCADIS, LQM and Leitat.

The aim of this study is to evaluate wider environmental impacts, i.e. other than those directly related to land use (both on- and off-site), of brownfield development by evaluating and applying the Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) approach across a number of European cases.

NICOLE sustainable remediation working group will contribute for the content.

For more information on MediTerra please contact Laurent Bakker.

Scoping study

Under suggestion of FAO’s Global Soil Partnership and with the support of the EU, in December 2013 the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 2015 as the ‘International Year of Soils’ (IYS) and 5 December of each year as the ‘World Soil Day’ (WSD) (see UNGA resolution).

In order to find out what kind of awareness-raising activities and events could be organised or co-organised by the European Commission to mark the IYS, a scoping study has been prepared on behalf of the Environment Directorate-General of the Commission.
