It was another successful workshop in a great city going through major development – Milan, Italy
The workshop – Creating value through sustainable land and asset management, was chaired by Mr Claudio Albano and supported by Regione Lombardia generated substantial interest, both within and outside our network.
Mr. Claudio Albano opening the NICOLE workshop in Milan, Italy on 8 June 2017.
For this workshop, we had not only invited speakers within our network but also experts from other disciplines such as urban planners to broaden our horizon. The papers highlighted the massive challenges faced by many cities in bringing former major industrial sites back into beneficial use – not least Milan where this challenge is being embraced with great foresight and innovation. The conference dinner took place in a massive former aircraft testing building, which is now used as a modern art gallery and social venue. There was a strong emphasis on the importance of natural and social capital, with papers showing how the value of green spaces and assets can be taken into account when making decisions about the cost benefit of regeneration options.
The interactive session, which allows our members to switch their daily roles with others, generated a lot of discussions and laughs. Stakeholder engagement, soft skills such as communication is also necessary for us.

We look forward to continue our discussion in Copenhagen, Denmark.
